The Story

On August 7, 1815, a British warship, the HMS Northumberland, taking Napoleon to St. Helena for his final exile
stopped at Madeira to take on supplies. Napoleon was persuaded to purchase a pipe of Madeira (A pipe is a barrel

Written Notes

Fine looking bottle with excellent level. Decanted two hours. Surprisingly smooth and gentle considering its age and over 20 percent alcohol content. Gorgeous, structured and vivid Boal, with loads of candied pear, maple syrup, vanilla, honeyed milk chocolate, and cream flavours. Long, creamy and delicious. Finish was still quite fresh and was filled with walnuts, spice and orange marmalade notes. This old beauty is drinking beautifully now and has the potential for cellaring until 2020.

Medium intense brown colour with olive green rim. Pronounced spicy dried fruit nose with marsipan and dark chocolate nuances. Full-bodied, sweet palate with vivid acidity and broad spicy mouthfeel. Long lingering finish. – JL 95p (5/2007)

This is the famous "Napoleon Madeira“. The story tells that Napoleon bought a pipe of the excellent 1792 vintage in 1815 on his way to his exile on St. Helena. Due to gastric problems he never touched it and after Napoleons death it was sold back to Blandys who bottled part as a vintage Madeira in 1840 and the rest as a Solera in 1957 in honour of Queen Elisabeth’s state visit to Portugal. It still has a good complex nose of toffee and tobacco. Its fresh acidity balances its medium sweetness and it is still very much alive.
